Texts From Nancy Drew

heyyyyy where are you right now
At home
Why?
do you think you could come get me?
are you tied up again?
i'm just over at the cave
by the old mill

so you're tied up
in a cave
you know
near the burned-down orphanage

please just answer the question
you should probably bring some scissors
for the rope?
there appears to be some rope here, yes
are you tied up with it?
Ned look
it's really hard for me to text with my hands all tied up like this
so please just stop asking so many questions and get over here ok

More extortionate Apple Codesign dickery

Fun fact!

With the default security settings on MacOS 10.8, Apple refuses to launch apps that are signed with a signature that is validly signed by Apple's CA if that key is for the iOS store instead of the OSX store.

% codesign -dvv DaliClock.app
Executable=DaliClock.app/Contents/MacOS/DaliClock
Identifier=org.jwz.DaliClock
Format=bundle with Mach-O universal (i386 x86_64)
CodeDirectory v=20100 size=7246 flags=0x0(none) hashes=356+3 location=embedded
Signature size=4334
Authority=iPhone Developer: Jamie Zawinski (Y5M82TL69N)
Authority=Apple Worldwide Developer Relations Certification Authority
Authority=Apple Root CA

Signed Time=Aug 22, 2012 1:15:13 PM
Info.plist entries=23
Sealed Resources rules=4 files=3
Internal requirements count=1 size=184

That right there is a valid, paid-for and un-expired cert, issued by Apple's one-and-only CA. A cert is a cert and a CA is a CA, so the only justification for this behavior is that they want to extort an additional hundred bucks a year out of you if you develop apps for both iOS and OSX.

Dicks.

What is this ★★★★★
by Fwhgkdkds - Version 5.18 - Aug 2, 2012

"I though it would save my screen but instead it crashed I got a blue screen that said that said and now my iPad shows me things that are not real not real but true and I must join them I must bring the change the change upon the world oh god it's happening"

So, my work here is done.

Browser cache, do you fucking speak it yet??

Is there still no fix for this yet? Jesus, Mother of Fuck, this is irritating. I'm tired of having a browser that has only one window and no cache.

Maybe I could have JavaScript implement its own god damned browser cache by dumping everything into local storage? Or does the iPad dump that shit willy-nilly too?

iOS 6 "From" field

0
0

I have a bunch of email identities I have to use. My "email address" in Mail on both desktop and iPhone is set to a list, which causes the From field to be a menu.

On the desktop, it defaults to the one of those addresses that was in the To field of the message you're replying to, which is great; and on iOS, it used to just default to the last one used.

In iOS 6 it is doing... Something else.

My list of addresses is: jwz@jwz.org, jz@jwz.org, jwz@dnalounge.com, booking@dnalounge.com, orders@dnalounge.com, manager@dnalounge.com, webmaster@dnalounge.com, jwz@dnapizza.com, booking@dnapizza.com, orders@dnapizza.com, manager@dnapizza.com, webmaster@dnapizza.com, jz480@jwz.org

And it is always defaulting to "orders@dnalounge.com" now.

You will notice that that address is neither the first, last, nor alphabetically first or last in the list.

If it is to default to one address all the time (which sucks), then i at least want to pick which one, without having to delete all the others as options.

Any ideas what the fuck it is doing? Or how to apply the Stick of Correction?

Why isn't DPT crowdsourced?

iOS 6 ad-tracking opt-out

It's plainly posted, right behind the sign that says "Beware of the Leopard Mountain Lion":

Settings → General → About → Advertising → Limit Ad Tracking → On

It's far from clear what, if anything, this actually accomplishes, but it's a thing that exists.

Update: Oh, hey, here's another:

Settings → Privacy → Location Services → System Services → Location-based iAds → Off

This is a level of obscurity worthy of Facebook. Well played, Apple.

Dali Clock, Four Inches Tall

To make your apps not be letterboxed on iPhone 5, you have to re-build and re-submit the app.

So to those of you with a crack-like addition to The Shiny, please enjoy Dali Clock 2.37 in the app store now.

(Yeah, I'll do a new xscreensaver release some time soon, but I've got some bugs there I want to look into first. Dali Clock didn't actually require any code changes, just a re-spin.)

Lowjack your sock drawer

New system uses RFID tech to keep track of your socks

Each individual sock comes with an RFID chip attached to the cuff. Stored on that chip is the sock's unique ID number. The Smarter Socks system also includes an RFID scanner, and a free iPhone app.

After a load of the socks have been washed, the user (or their maid, perhaps) scans the chip on each sock. The scanner sends the data by Bluetooth to the iPhone, which is running the app. That app proceeds to tell the user how old the sock is, whether it's for the left or right foot, how many times it's been washed, and which sock is its partner. Once its partner is located and scanned, the app updates the number of washings for the pair.

Notes and Mail annoyances

Dear Lazyweb,

Why do my pages in the "Notes" app keep duplicating themselves? It seems like I get a duplicate page every time I edit one of them, but it's a Heisenbug because I can't make it happen at will. If I edit a note on my iPhone, wait a few minutes, edit it again on my iPad, and repeat, it does the right thing. And yet, it seems like every time I edit a note then put my device away, the next day I've got two of them (the pre-edit version and the new one). WTF?

Also, is there still no way for me to get push notifications of new email on my iPhone? My mail lives on an SSL IMAP server under my own control, as is right and proper. I am unwilling to CC all of my email to Apple, Google or any other third party. And yet, I would like to get a notification when new mail arrives, instead of having to manually poll. Am I still out of luck?

page-dragging with Javascript

I made dragging left/right go to the prev/next page on the DNA Lounge galleries and flyers pages. Does it work reasonably for you?

I noticed that when people look at the photos on their iPhones, they expect dragging to go to the next photo, so, this. It doesn't animate smoothly -- the new photo doesn't slide in, it just loads the new page with document.location -- but it's better than nothing, I guess.

The code is in dragnav.js. I think it might interact weirdly with pages that are zoomed in, but it's hard to tell, because the image-sizing stuff in gallery.js already seems to interact weirdly with that all on its own.

I've only tested this on iPad and iPhone. Does it work ok elsewhere?

Sophisticated botnet steals more than $47M by infecting PCs and phones

Clicking on the link directs them to a site that attempts to download one or more trojans: customized versions of Zeus and its SpyEye and CarBerp variants that allow attackers to record Web visits and then inject HTML and JavaScript into the victim's browser. The next time the victim visits their bank website, the trojans capture their credentials and launch a JavaScript that spoofs a request for a "security upgrade" from the site, offering to protect their mobile device from attack. The JavaScript captures their phone number and their mobile operating system information -- which are used in the second level of Eurograbber's attack.

With the phone number and platform information, the attacker sends a text message to the victim's phone with a link to a site that downloads what it says is "encryption software" for the device. But it is, in fact, "Zeus in the mobile" (ZITMO) malware -- a Trojan crafted for the Android and BlackBerry mobile operating systems that injects itself between the user and the mobile browser and SMS messaging software. With both devices now compromised, the malware waits for the victim to access a bank account, and then immediately transfers a percentage of the victim's balance to an account set up by the criminals running the botnet.

The malware then intercepts the confirmation text message sent by the bank, forwarding it to the trojan's command and control server via a relay phone number. The server uses the message to confirm the transaction and withdraw the money. The same process happens every time the victim logs into their bank account, gradually withdrawing money without alerting the user.

I'm curious about the endpoint: how did they set up the account to which they are transferring the money, and how do they extract the money from it?

Burrito Bomber

The world's first airborne mexican food delivery system

It works like this:

  1. You connect to the Burrito Bomber web-app and order a burrito. Your smartphone sends your current location to our server, which generates a waypoint file compatible with the drone's autopilot.

  2. We upload the waypoint file to the drone and load your burrito in to our custom made Burrito Delivery Tube.

  3. The drone flies to your location and releases the Burrito Delivery Tube. The burrito parachutes down to you, the drone flies itself home, and you enjoy your carne asada.

How come if I add a "Reminder" on my iPad, I have to quit the desktop "Reminders" app and re-start it before my reminder shows up? Every time.

How come if I edit a "Note" on my iPad or iPhone, three quarters of the time (but not every time) the next time I look at my notes from a different device, that whole page has been duplicated? One will have the old write-date, one has the new.

iCloud, you suck.

Oh, also, how come Safari on iOS has -- again -- gotten in the mode where it refuses to remember HTTP AUTH logins on my internal site with a self-signed SSL cert? This was fixed for a while but now it's back.

Full MAME emulator for non-jailbroken iOS

Gridlee: Get it before it's gone.

Gridlee is a freeware arcade game from 1982 which was re-released on the iTunes App Store by David Loureiro. This would have been unremarkable, if Gridlee was a straight port from the source code and if it wasn't actually powered by an up-to-date and fully featured version of MAME4iOS Reloaded.

This means if you have a program capable of tunneling into the iOS file-system through USB, you can once again have a working version of MAME on a non-jailbroken device, complete with your own ROM images. As I can't think of anyone who would legitimately want to play Gridlee on an iPad, this was likely an intentional attempt to sneak the emulator back into the App Store, so we're guessing Apple won't be hosting the file for too long. Grab it while you can...

Update: In case you were wondering, yes, it's been pulled.

Apple: still dicks.
